Dual Diagnosis Plays an Important Role in Substance Recovery

In a recent study, it was found that those with severe schizophrenia have benefitted from talk therapy, in which the patient focuses on defusing self-defeating assumptions in order to better handle the symptoms associated with their mental illness. Although most people afflicted with addiction are not schizophrenic, there are cases where addiction has evolved from an individual’s attempt to self-medicate in the hopes of finding relief from the symptoms and difficulties associated with many types of mental illness, schizophrenia included.
Being able to clearly separate the addiction from the underlying issues is the first step, but now, the tools that are developed during treatment in order to help work through an addiction are also that much more important due to their ability to help with the effects of schizophrenia.
A patient may come on site with a substance abuse problem, but there can be underlying issues that exacerbate their condition and make recovery from addiction difficult without working through the core issues that have led them to this point. Because of The Ranch PA’s ability to focus on dual-diagnosis based on an individual client’s needs, we are better able create a plan that is then tailored to those specific treatment needs. With the findings in this study, it is clear that not only does therapy play an immense role in recovering from substance abuse, but it can have an incredibly positive impact on other mental issues, especially regarding schizophrenia.

In a recent study, it was found that those with severe schizophrenia have benefitted from talk therapy, a common form of therapy used in addiction treatment. Learn more about talk therapy and how it can benefit both addiction recovery and mental health. What is Talk Therapy? Also known as Psychotherapy, Talk Therapy is a general umbrella term for different therapeutic techniques. Heavily associated with Psychoanalysis, Talk Therapy is used to describe a range of treatment approaches, including Group Therapy, Individual Therapy, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Two of the most common Talk Therapies are Cognitive Behavioral and Interpersonal. Cognitive Behavioral works to identify negative thought patterns and how they affect overall quality of life. During Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, the client develops strategies for changing these negative thought patterns into positive ones. Interpersonal Therapy, on the other hand, focuses more on relationships. This includes how to make positive changes to improve them. During talk therapy, the client discusses problems, challenges, and life-changing events that are both positive and negative. One of the main focuses of Talk Therapy is defusing self-defeating assumptions in order to better handle the symptoms associated with mental illness. The goal of Talk Therapy is to gain insight and relief from mental health issues, including addiction. Mental Health Issues and Addiction Although most people afflicted with addiction are not schizophrenic, it is not uncommon for addiction to develop from an individual’s attempt to self-medicate. Those struggling with mental health issues, including schizophrenia, turn to drugs and alcohol hoping to find relief from the symptoms and difficulties associated with their mental health illness. One key to achieving long-lasting sobriety involves uncovering the underlying issues that led to addiction. These often include mental health issues. Should a mental health issue be revealed during the course of addiction treatment, it is called a dual diagnosis. The customized addiction treatment plan must address the addiction as well as the mental health issue in order for the client to experience lifelong sobriety. Being able to clearly separate the addiction from the underlying issues is the first step. Understanding the tools developed during treatment to help work through an addiction can also help clients cope with the effects of a mental health illness like schizophrenia.
