Sipping On Some Nonsense: What Is Lean?

What is lean? It is a mix of cough syrups containing codeine and promethazine, soda, and hard candy. These cough syrups are Schedule V drugs that are only legal when prescribed by a doctor. Lean drink also goes by the following names:

  • Purple Drank, Stuff, or Sprite
  • Sizzurp
  • Drank
  • Dirty Sprite
  • Barre
  • Texas Tea
  • Memphis Mud

A Pennsylvania trauma-informed therapy program can help overcome lean abuse. Read on to learn about lean and how you can get help for yourself or a loved one today. Don’t wait until it is too late!

How Does Lean Drink Affect You?

Lean drink has several effects on the user. The promethazine from the cough syrup acts as a relaxing sedative, while the codeine gives a euphoric feeling. This feeling lasts between 3 to 6 hours. Lean users have trouble standing and lean to one side or the other, hence the name.  It has an intensely sweet flavor due to the mix of soda, candy, and syrup.

Is it Dangerous?

When asking, “what is lean?” a common second question is if it is dangerous. The answer is yes. People often combine the drug with alcohol and other substances, amplifying the sedation and euphoria. These combinations make the drug even more lethal. It is also difficult to know how much of each drug is in a cup of lean drink; typically, users mix ingredients without measuring. The culture of lean is also alluring to young adults, who don’t take the drug seriously. Three 6 Mafia’s 2000 hit “Sippin‘ On Some Syrup” helped popularize the concoction. Rappers have glorified and rapped about lean for over 20 years, furthering its reach. According to the Huffington Post, the drug has caused the deaths of three famous rappers.

Symptoms of Lean Abuse

From rappers to football players and teens, what are the dangers of lean abuse? The opioids in it lead drinkers to need more and more to achieve the same effect. This increase turns into life-threatening complications and overdose from an inability to breathe.  Often symptoms include:

  • Slowed heart rate and breathing
  • Dental decay
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Memory loss
  • Hallucinations
  • Impaired vision
