Person learning what to expect in rehab from their therapist

What To Expect in Rehab

If you’re wondering what to expect in rehab, you most likely have a problem with drinking or drug abuse or struggling with a mental health condition. A residential treatment program is where you’ll live in a treatment center and work on recognizing triggers and developing healthy coping skills to prevent symptoms from worsening. Enrolling in a program is the safest way to treat many mental health conditions, including substance use disorders (SUDs), depression, anxiety, and other issues.

The Ranch PA supports people from all walks of life struggling to control their drinking and looking for help to break free from their addiction. Our residential treatment program uses the top therapeutic modalities, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), along with medication to ease any physical symptoms. You’ll participate in group and private therapy sessions led by an experienced therapist who’ll work with you to learn more about your condition and how to treat it.

What To Expect in Rehab

A rehab program is a structured program designed to aid people who are struggling with addiction, depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and other treatable conditions. This approach offers a comprehensive and structured method to address every aspect of the mental health condition. Clients collaborate with an experienced therapist through group sessions and individual therapy, ensuring personalized and holistic care.

If you’re considering enrolling in a residential or outpatient treatment program, a few things to expect in rehab include:

  • Intake and assessment – All clients who sign up will complete a full health assessment to determine the best course of action, including which therapies and medications to treat their specific condition.
  • Individual and group therapy sessions – Clients will participate in group and private therapy sessions with a trained therapist with experience treating their mental health conditions. During private therapy, you’ll talk about the reasons for your negative behaviors and work on developing healthy coping skills. In group therapy, you’ll work with your peers to talk about your experiences and participate in role-playing activities, group discussions, and other holistic activities.
  • Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) – Medication is very effective in reducing physical withdrawals, cravings, and other disruptive symptoms. Medical staff will administer medications based on your plan and monitor you for adverse side effects.
  • Relapse prevention – Clients will develop a relapse prevention plan with their therapist and address any specific concerns they have about staying sober. They’ll continue developing these skills through aftercare and alumni programs.
  • Peer support – You’ll develop healthy relationships with your peers during therapy and rely on these relationships to help keep you on track to meet your recovery goals.

Rehab programs have multiple treatment options, including residential and outpatient treatment programs.

Residential vs. Outpatient Treatment

The main difference between residential and outpatient treatment programs is the time commitment each requires. A residential program is a full-time, 24/7 program where you live at a treatment center and participate in daily therapy. It typically lasts up to 30 days, but longer options are available for more severe cases.

An outpatient program is less restrictive than residential treatment. Clients will participate in therapy sessions, taking four to eight hours daily, and return home in the evening. Types of outpatient programs include:

  • Partial hospitalization program (PHP) – This program typically lasts two to six weeks and supports the transition from residential treatment to outpatient treatment.
  • Intensive outpatient program (IOP) – This program generally lasts four to 12 weeks. You’ll participate in therapy sessions for two to five hours a day and return home each night.

Both programs utilize behavioral and holistic therapy options along with medication-assisted treatment to create a comprehensive treatment program.

Benefits of a Residential Treatment Program

There are many benefits of enrolling in a residential treatment program for anyone who’s struggling with addiction or other mental health conditions. It can give people time to work on developing healthy coping skills and learn how to recognize triggers to prevent their symptoms from worsening.

Learn More About Your Condition

One of the first steps in residential treatment is learning about your condition and how to stop it from worsening. Therapists dive deep into a person’s background to uncover the underlying reasons behind their behaviors and develop new behaviors to replace the old ones.

Medication-Assisted Treatment

Your individual treatment plan will include medication to ease any addiction withdrawals, cravings, or other depressive or anxiety symptoms. Medical staff will administer medications based on your treatment plan and monitor you for adverse side effects. They’ll adjust the dosage as necessary and begin tapering you off once your symptoms fade.

Relapse Prevention

If you’re struggling with a substance use disorder, therapists will include relapse prevention therapy along with other therapeutic options. During treatment, your therapist will help you identify triggering situations and help you find new ways of coping with the problem. You’ll learn how to stop symptoms from worsening and maintain your sober path no matter what life throws at you.

Family Therapy

Another benefit of residential treatment is how it can bring families back together. Parents, spouses, and children can participate in family therapy to resolve any lingering conflicts that may cause a relapse. They’ll learn all about the disorder and how they can become a part of your sober journey by creating a stable and supportive home environment.
